Article about Doctors’ Complete Disclosure on Medical Information

I just came across this very interesting article on yahoo.com: Many doctors stay mum on controversial care: study

This makes me wonder if this incidence rate is higher for cochlear implant doctors, audiologists and other health care providers? Perhaps this is why there is not wide-spread knowledge on American Sign Language and deaf culture among hearing parents who do not do their own research?

All the more incentive for us to take this into our hands and do some education out there!

  1. Actually I do know many doctors who actively discourage the parents from exposing their kids to deaf people, steering them to audiologists and speech therapists.

  2. Really? Wow… Is this from personal experience?

I can believe passive discouragement, but active discouragement? I would think that’s unethical…

  3. I grew up in a medical community. I’ve also heard this many times from parents in the older days. I certainly hope the doctors are more neutral nowadays, but I kinda doubt it, unfortunately. Many doctors actively encourage the parents to consider cochlear implants because they are trained to view deafness as a medical disorder.
